    2015 Library Client Survey: response from the University Librarian

    In August 2015, we ran our bi-annual client survey, which provides a solid basis for us to improve our services.

    We got an excellent response to our invitation to participate –3,862 students and staffs responded with 8,281 separate comments. One of the most pleasing aspects of your responses was the number of positive comments we received. The largest of which were about Library staff and their helpfulness and approachability.

    The survey provides 28 statements about our service and asks for a score (1 – 7) on how you rate a) the importance of that aspect of our service and b) how you rate our performance in delivering that aspect of our service.

    These ‘performance’ and ‘importance’ scores are compared. If something is important to you, but we aren’t performing as well as you might want us to, a ‘gap’ score is created.

    Most important

    You told us that the three most important aspects of our service are:
    • ‘I can get wireless access in the Library where I need to’
    • ‘Library staff provide accurate answers to my enquiries’
    • ‘Library staff treat me fairly and without discrimination’

    Highest performance

    The three highest performing aspects of our service are:
    • ‘Library staff treat me fairly and without discrimination’
    • ‘Library staff are approachable and helpful’
    • ‘Library staff provide accurate answers to my queries’

    Lowest performing

    Our lowest performing aspects of service are:
    • ‘A computer is available when I need one’
    • ‘I can find a place in the Library to create a group when I need to’
    • ‘I can find a quiet place in the Library to study when I need to’

    Gaps

    The largest ‘gaps’ we had between what you feel is important and how we perform are:
    • ‘I can find a quiet place in the Library to study when I need to’
    • ‘A computer is available when I need one’
    • ‘I can find a place in the Library to work in a group when I need to’.

    Our response to study spaces and computers

    A number of the gaps, and low performing aspects, such as study space (for individuals or groups) and laptop facilities (such as wireless and power) are currently being addressed.

    In the long term, the New Academic Street project for Swanston Library will double this Library site’s number of group and quiet study places, and we will increase the number of power points.

    New Academic Street opens in 2017. While we have some service disruptions before then, we will end up with a great facility. Until then, we are increasing seating both within and beyond the Library on a temporary basis.

    In spite of losing a sizable proportion of floor space,  some clever planning and hard work have resulted in more seating – during the construction phase – than we had before this work started.

    We are in the process of analysing the need for extra study spaces at our Bundoora, Brunswick and Carlton Library sites.  135 additional power outlets (double GPOs, single GPOs and USB charging points) were added to Brunswick, Bundoora, Carlton, Bundoora East Library sites as part of Student Experience program of works.

    Computer availability is a difficult problem to overcome, but we are working with the Information Technology Service area of RMIT to identify ways to assuage this demand. Many students have their own computer and the addition of more powerpoints and better wireless will assist more students who wish to ‘BYOD’ (Bring Your Own Device).

    Our response to issues we will investigate further

    Some of the other issues, which have been highlighted as needing attention include:

    ‘Items I’m looking for on Library shelves are usually there’

    There is a range of different factors that influence responses to this statement. It is not clear whether students are looking for textbooks available for long-term loan (these are only available for short-term loan from the Reserve collection), whether we have a problem with items getting ‘lost’ on the shelves due to the complexity of the shelf numbering system, or if there is some other problem.

    We will investigate this issue further.

    ‘LibrarySearch is easy to use’ and ‘The Library web site is easy to use’

    Low ratings for these statements also require more investigation. We find users often don’t differentiate between external sources which we cannot control and those areas of the web which we can control.

    We will be running some focus groups and conducting user testing to explore how we might approach these problems. Until then we encourage users to have a look at our online tutorials, ask for assistance at any of our libraries, or if you are online, click on our Ask a Librarian service for live “chat” assistance.  Early in 2016 we will also be offering classes in how to use these web based resources.

    Extended opening hours for exam time

    As we approach exam time Bundoora Library, Carlton Library and Swanston Library will be open longer, giving you more time to study.

    From 5 October
    ● Bundoora Library will open until 10pm Monday -­ Thursday and open from 10am on weekends.

    From 12 October
    ● Carlton Library will open from 10am on weekends.
    ● Swanston Library will open until 8pm on weekends.

    Past Exam Papers

    Past exams are available online in PDF or in print format in the Reserve collection at Library sites.

    Search for exam papers:

    1. Past exam papers are listed in the Learning Repository:

       ● Enter your course code (in format ABCD1234) to retrieve all available past exam papers for your course.

    2. A small number of printed past exam papers are kept in the Library. Use LibrarySearch:

       ● Select Reserve from the drop down list of Search types
       ● Search for exam and the course code eg exam math2155

    Alternative study spaces

    It's that time of the year when the Library gets squashy as it fills with wonderfully studious types, like you, all completing assessment items. But did you know there are other study spaces around our campuses where you can connect with the Library online?

    Check out the newly revamped study spaces page, where you can find rooms for independent study, group study and heating up your lunch.

    The Library has heaps of digital resources - e-books, article databases, streaming videos and more. And, if you get stuck, you can Ask a Librarian for assistance by phone or online.

    Exam study tips

    We've put together a few study tips to help get you through exam time.

    Past exam papers are a great way to determine what topics you need to spend more time on. They are easily accessible through LibrarySearch. Make use of the silent zones at our Library sites to minimise distractions.

    ● See if any documentaries or YouTube videos have been made on your study topics. It's a good way to break up your study schedule and learn in a different way, particularly if you are a visual learner.

    ● Download a computer app to avoid distracting sites like Facebook and YouTube (after watching said educational YouTube videos!).

    ● Forming a study group with friends can be a great way to share exam questions, motivate each other and give feedback. A good way of testing your understanding of a topic is by teaching it to others. If you arrange to meet people in the morning, you can’t sleep in. Group study rooms can be booked online for up to 2 hours if you need a space to get together.

    ● Are you a morning person or a night owl? Think about what times of the day you are most productive and if possible plan your study schedule around these times.

    ● Try listening to music while studying. Film soundtracks and classical music with no spoken words can help to elevate your mood while not being a distraction.

    ● Writing helps you remember things better than typing.

    ● Take regular breaks to stretch and exercise. Even a 15 minute brisk walk around campus will help improve your concentration, energy levels and memory.

    Now is the perfect time to return your overdue Library items, and here's the bonus: we'll wipe your fines if they're below $25 (for students) and $50 (for staff) on Monday 23 November.

    If your fine is over this threshold you can pay by card at the Library.

    New service point at Swanston Library

    The new service point at Swanston Library is now open! We've replaced the old Service and Enquiries desk with a new service point. Designed in collaboration with Lyons Architects the new triangle shape allows Library staff to work more collaboratively with users in side by side arrangement. The service point is height adjustable and provides full accessibility for all users. 

    It's a one stop shop for all Library related questions, whether you want to know about borrowing, holds, or need some help finding journal articles for your assignments.

    The new service point will meet the changing requirements for our new, dynamic library service as part of the New Academic Street (NAS) project.

    Taking the time to learn EndNote can reward you with a well-organised bibliographic management system. You can freely download the program from the University's website and it allows you to:
    • gather, store and manage references and electronic documents
    • automatically create and format bibliographies in your referencing style
    • search and retrieve records from catalogues and databases
    • insert citations directly into documents in your referencing style

    Know your research methods and design your methodology

    Of the many research method and methodology resources the Library holds, two excellent online collections are SAGE Research Methods and Emerald Research Zone “How to Guides”.

    Covering all levels of research, SAGE Research Methods is an impressive resource with its comprehensive methods library of over 1000 full-text articles, chapters and books. Additional tools include case studies, teaching datasets, instructional guides and a methods map. The map is a powerful visual discovery tool that demonstrates relationships between research methods and methodologies, and allows you to browse related content.

    Emerald targets the social sciences, business and management with their “How to Guides”: detailed introductory articles with reference lists. Topics include How to... Use Mixed Methods Research, How to … Use Crowdsourcing as a Research Tool and How ... Conduct a Focus Group.
